Sonia Engman is a professional Choreographer / Performer / Educator. She believes in the importance of art as a means of social change for people of all social and cultural backgrounds. She began dancing at the age of four and the discipline and beauty of the study resonated with her deeply. She spent her first seven years training at the Hayden Ballet School and then transitioned to Keshet Dance Company where she spent the next eight years vigorously training in Keshet’s Pre-Professional Program. Modern dance, ballet, and hip hop techniques are the basis of Sonia’s training. She has trained in Street/Social styles such as HipHop, House, Breaking, and Waacking. Sonia has had the privilege of attending many summer dance intensives to broaden her perspective and views of dance, including the Joffrey Ballet New York Jazz intensive and the American Dance Festival six-week intensive in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Sonia continued her dance training at the University of New Mexico (UNM) where she received a B.A. in Dance and a minor in Arts Management in 2016. She has had the opportunity to work with many artists such as Vladimir Conde Reche, Donna Jewell, Mary Anne Santos Newhall, and Erika Pujic. She traveled to Sölden, Austria with UNM’s Head of Dance, Donna Jewell, to perform in a multi-disciplinary and multimedia performance in the Alps of Austria. Sonia was cast in multiple roles in the dance program’s Faculty Dance Concert as a soloist and in ensemble work. She choreographed and auditioned works for multiple UNM productions, many of which were chosen to represent UNM at the American College Dance Association. In November 2016, Sonia was accepted into TigerStyle! Crew’s apprenticeship program, IdolEscence. TigerStyle! Crew is a nationally based dance crew established in 2007. Sonia is working with TigerStyle! to continue professional work and training. She believes you must always remain a student, therefore she is continually expanding her knowledge and skills to better herself, and her students.
